- This is the "non-picture version", as it is too big for the web. See Dave or Lisa if you want the print out version
- Before we proceed, you need to have the following things for dial-up training. You will not be trained on these items.
- 1. You must have a PC, not a Mac.
- 2. It must have a modem in it (almost all computers nowadays do)
- 3. You must have Office 97 (or Office 2000) installed. The regular install will not work - you must choose "custom" and install everything. If you didn't install it as "custom" you can go back and do it again and it will work just fine.
- Also, you will be bound by our network, meaning you have the same protection as the kids get, so "bad sites" will not be allowed to be visited. You will be connected through the modem, so it will not be nearly as fast - it will be just like dial-up service from home, but besides that, it will be just like our network.
- There will be 6 major things you need to do to set this up. Everyone will have step by step screen shots to help you out, but to get an overall picture, here's what we will do:
- 1. Set up the network properties for your dial-up service.
- 2. Create your icon that you will double click on to run this service.
- 3. Set up a file on your computer that will speed things up.
- 4. Change settings so you can access the Internet.
- 5. Set up Outlook so you can access your email.
- 6. Share your computer at school so you can use it at home.
- 1. Set up the network properties for your dial-up service
- 1. Go to the Start menu, and then choose Settings and then Control Panels
- 2. Choose Network and double click
- 3. Click on the "Configuration" tab.
- Your network needs to have 3 components: client for Microsoft Networks, TCP dial-up (not dialup adapter - TCP has to be there) adapter, and file and print sharing. Some computers may have this done already, but here are the steps for setting them up if they are not present:Client for Microsoft Networks
- a. click "add"
- b. click "client" and the "add"
- c. click "Microsoft"
- d. click "Client for Microsoft Networks" and then "OK"
- Next do:
- TCP dial-up Adapter
- a. click "add"
- b. click "protocol" and "add"
- c. click "Microsoft"
- d. click "TCP/IP" and "OK"
- Next do:
- File and Print Sharing
- a. click on "File and Print Sharing"
- b. put a check in both boxes
- c. click OK
- Once you have the 3 items added as in the picture above, then:
- a. double click on "Client for Microsoft Networks"
- b. click the checkbox shown at left
- c. for your Windows NT domain, put in the same as you did for your workgroup earlier (dist34campus, algs, Oakland, or antioch34). Click OK
- Double click on TCP/IP dial-up adapter
- a. click on the WINS Configuration tab
- b. click the circle for "Enable WINS Resolution"
- c. Under "WINS Server Search Order" type in these 2 numbers, clicking "Add" after each:
- 209.174.46.2 (notice the . are there for you) "add"
- your screen should look exactly like the one on the left.
DON'T CLICK OK YET
- Before clicking OK, click on the DNS Configuration tab and follow the below directions:
- a. click on the circle for "Enable DNS"
- b. The "Host" has to be unique. In other words, you can?t name it the same as your computer at school. Besides that rule, you can name your computer anything you want, although it?s easier if you don?t use spaces - you could name it your name with home after it - like downinghome
- c. skip down to "Domain Suffix Search Order" and type in the top box: dist34.lake.k12.il.us
- d. click "add" and it gets entered into the bottom box as you see at the left
- 4. Click on the identification tab. The "Computer Name" has to be the exact same as the "host" name from step 3b on the last page. For "Workgroup" you pick either dist34campus (for AUGS, Petty, and Board members), algs (for Lower Grade), Oakland (for Oakland), and Antioch34 (for District Office). "Computer Description" can be anything you choose.
- Now you can click OK and it will ask you if you want to restart. Say no for now, although we will have to restart eventually. It may copy some files, so you have to wait a little bit. There is a slight chance that it will need your windows 95 or windows 98 disk.
- 2. Create your icon that you will double click on to run this service.
- 1. Make sure you are on your desktop. (where you are when Windows starts up)
- 2. Double click on "My Computer"
- 3. You should see a "Dial-up Networking" folder, which you can double click and open up
- 4. You will see a "Make New Connection" icon. Double click that to open it up.
- The steps will now be a little different depending on if you have Windows 95 or Windows 98. The following is a list of things you will need:
- Give it a name - something like Antioch Dial-up, but you can name it whatever
- Type in the area code and number (I will tell you which phone number you will use 8177 or 8178)
- You should now see another icon in your folder, name "Antioch Dial-up" or whatever you called it.
- Double click on this icon (this is how you will normally access your service)
- When you are totally set up, you will enter your user name (first letter of first name then last name) and then your network password. Technically, you get a dial-in password and a network password, but I have made them the same. The first time you dial-up you will have to enter this info twice, but after that you will only have to do it once.
- Don't click on connect yet, as we have some more to do, but if yours looks somewhat like the picture on the left (the picture is from Win 98) then you are all set. For now CLICK CANCEL
- 3. Set up a file on your computer that will speed things up.
- 1. Go to the Start menu and then Run
- 2. Type in the word command and then click OK
you will see a DOS prompts that looks like below:
- 3. Type in cd\windows hit enter
- 4. Type in edit hosts hit enter
You will now see a screen that looks like the one below, except for the writing which you need to input.
- 5. Type in 209.174.46.15 (press tab) type in dist34mail
- 6. Click on File and then Save (or the Alt key and then F and S if the mouse isn?t working)
- 7. Click on File and then Exit (or Alt then F then X)
- 8. Close the window (x) and you are done!
- 4. Change settings so you can access the Internet.
- 1. Go to the Start menu, then Settings, then Control Panels.
- 2. Double click on Internet Options
The following is for Internet Explorer 5.0. Other versions of Internet Explorer will look a little different, but the same information will get inputed.
- 3. Click on the "Connection" tab.
- 4. For IE 5.0 click on "Lan Settings" and for 3.0 click on "Connect Through Proxy" and settings.
- 5. You must have the following put in:
- Click on "Use proxy server"
- For the address, type 209.174.46.250
- For the port, type 80
- Click on "Bypass proxy server for local addresses"
- If you click on advanced (no picture), you should have "Use the same proxy for all protocols" checked
- 6. Click OK and apply until you are out of those windows
*note that some virus protection programs also have a place to input these proxy numbers. On Dr. Solomon's, for example, you have to enter those numbers or else it overrides the numbers and causes problems. Check your documentation on your virus program if there is a problem.
RESTART YOUR COMPUTER. It will ask you for a network password when starting up - you need to click cancel, as you have not dialed into the system yet and are not connected to our system. Every time you start up your computer you may cancel the network password. When you start the dial-in, it asks for your password.
You now need to dial into the system. Open up "My Computer", open "Dial-up Networking" and open "Antioch Dial-In" - type in your user name and click "connect". First time only: It may take a little bit to connect - after connected wait about 1 minute to make sure the whole network is downloaded to your computer
- 5. Set up Outlook so you can access your email.
I assume that you have Office 97 or Office 2000 set up on your machine and you have custom installed it so that Microsoft Exchange server is present. You also have to be dialed in.
- 1. Go to Start, then Settings, then Control Panels.
- 2. Double Click on "Mail" or it could say "Mail and Fax"
- 3. Click "add"
- 4. choose "Microsoft Exchange Server"
click OK
Again, there are differences between what operating system you are using, but you need to know 2 pieces of information that will allow you to do this.
- 5. For "Microsoft Exchange Server" you will type in dist34mail
- 6. For "Mailbox" you can type in your name if you know how it is exactly spelled on email, or I recommend using the first 2 letters of your first name. In this way it will ask you the first time you start outlook, and you can choose your name so there are no spelling errors or problems. Windows 98 can click on "Check name" right now and it will tell you if it knows what name it is if not, it will let you choose from a list. Windows 95 will get to do this once you open Outlook.
- 7. Click apply and then OK
- 8. Start Microsoft Outlook - it should work, but we have to give you the global address book and make sure your messages are delivered to your box, instead of the personal folders.
- 9. In Outlook, go to the Tools menu and choose "Services"
- 10. Under the delivery tab, choose your name
- 11. Under the addressing tab, choose global address list (if it?s not there you can "add" it)
- 6. Share your computer at school so you can use it at home.
You can share a folder of yours at school that you can access at home. After the last 5 major steps we've done, this one is easy!
- 1. At school, go to "My computer" and get to the folder (it could be the whole hard drive if you want) that you want to share. Right click on this folder and then select "sharing".
- 2. Click on "shared" instead of "not shared" and then pick a password and type it in twice (very important so no one can access your files). Click OK and you are set.
- To access your school computer from home:
- 1. Click onto your dial-up networking.
- 2. Go to the Start menu and then Run.
Now it depends on what your folder is named and what your computer is named. Let's say my computer's name is techcoor and the folder I'm sharing from school is named Downing.
- 3. Under Run, type \\techcoor\Downing and click OK. The \\ says it will be a network find, while the techcoor is which computer and the Downing is the folder on that computer.
Now you should have a window that comes up that is from your school's computer. You can copy and open files from that just like your own computer. Pretty cool!
